A Nepalese holiday called Gai Jatra is mostly observed by the Newar people in the valley in remembrance of their departed family members. Children in cow costumes and other traditional garb parade through several towns throughout the occasion. It usually happens in the months of Bhadra, which are August or September. The Taya Macha dance, performed during Gai Jatra in Pokhara, is a unique performance in which four fairies circle a central joker while listening to music performed by their Newari companions. Today, young Newars practice this dance at various locations across the Pokhara Valley and perform it in a dance competition organized by the valley. The residents of the Pokhara Valley celebrate this day with great joy and enthusiasm.
